Everybody loves a little discount on their purchases and the retailers have the power of allowing that privilege. OpenCart offers endless possibilities of doing that, notably discounts and specials. However, they are often mistaken to be interchangeable, which is not the case as there are a few major differences.
Discount generally means that whenever a customer buys more than one product, a deduction from the usual cost of the product is offered i.e. on buying a single item, the cost would be $100, but the cost of buying 3 items together would be $88 each. The silver lining – Buy more to save more.
Discounts, however, can also be applied to a single item but maybe for specific customers.
If you are into B2B then check out these B2B features in OpenCart. Let us now go forward to have a look at how you can set up discounts to customers in OpenCart:

5. When the Discount page in OpenCart opens up, click on the Add Discount button. The discount tab will need the following information:-
- Customer Group: A group of customers will need to be mentioned who are apt for the criteria of the discount to be allowed in OpenCart.
- Quantity: The minimum number of items which a customer should buy to be able to avail the discount on it should also be mentioned.
- Price: The discounted price (price after applying the discount) should also be filled up by you.
- Date Start – Date End: A period of time for which the discount will run for the customers can also be filled. Just in case both the fields are left blank, the discount will start immediately and run continuously.

Coming down to Special Price now – a special price is a product’s sale price at that moment which is usually less than the sale price previously. For example, a product may cost $100, but by using specials in OpenCart, you will be allowed to set the price of the product as $90. In this way, a customer can see “old price-new price” difference. Let us now go forward to have a look at how you can set up special prices in OpenCart.
The Steps to set up Special Price in OpenCart:-
- Log into your OpenCart admin interface.
- Hover over the Catalog tab and click on Products from the dropdown.

- Customer Group: A group of customers will need to be mentioned who are apt for the criteria of the discount to be allowed in OpenCart
- Priority: If more than one discount list exists, the priority will decide which one will be displayed in the product’s page. The one with lowest priority will be displayed.
- Price: The custom price (after the process of applying special price).

OpenCart does not allow both Special and Discount for one single product. However, if a particular product exists which has both the setup, then the special would get the priority since special prices only last for a few weeks or months but discounts are generally long-term. Hence, by prioritizing special, OpenCart helps you reduce your risk of loss by a fair margin if you someday accidentally go wrong somewhere.
